Database Publishing

Database publishing is becoming the fastest way to publish and more readily accepted, primarily because of the cost savings it offers. In database publishing, marketing materials such as catalogs, price books and parts manuals are actually a formatted ASCII text file that's drawn directly out of the very computer database that has the original data (part numbers, descriptions, prices, etc.). This data, which often has to be converted from numbers to text, is brought into a desktop publishing package such as FrameMaker, with appropriate templates designed with the proper formatting to accept the data, cleaned up where it may be necessary and sent to the printer, converted to HTML or PDF file format. The savings in time and money can be enormous, because if the data is correct and accurate in the database, it will automatically be so in the finished document, without the need to check and double-check the figures. This dramatically reduces proofing and editing time and saves production time and costs.
